Pit Bull rescues owner from train’s path

FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston.com – An 8-year-old pit bull named Lilly is being hailed a hero after frantically pulling her unconscious owner from train tracks moments before a freight train barreled through.

The engineer who stopped the train and called first responders saw the dog named Lilly pulling her owner, Christine Spain, away from the tracks around midnight on May 4 in Shirley. The engineer attempted to stop, but couldn't avoid hitting Lilly.

Spain was not injured, but Lilly suffered a complete "de-gloving" of her right foot: all of the muscle and skin were gone. Her pelvis was fractured in multiple locations and she suffered other internal injuries. But even as first police and firefighters arrived at the scene, Lilly stayed by her owner's side.

Lilly was taken to an emergency animal hospital in Acton, where Boston Police Officer David Lanteigne, who'd rescued Lilly three years prior as a therapy dog for his mother who has suffered from alcoholism for nearly her entire life, picked her up and then brought her to Angell Animal Medical Center in Boston, where emergency veterinarians examined Lilly.

Lilly's right front leg could not be saved and had to be amputated, and because of her age, doctors decided not to operate on her pelvis until she had time to recover from the amputation.

She had the second surgery Sunday and is now recovering in Angell's Emergency and Critical Care unit in a kennel adorned with pictures, notes and get-well cards brought by her family, friends and neighbors.

Lilly's medical care will likely run into the thousands of dollars. A fund has been set up to help offset her care. You can donate to the fund by visiting www.mspca.org/helplilly .

Darling Sophie

Five-month-old Sophie takes her first steps, after only 1 week of physical therapy to overcome her spinal injury.

Watch Sophie's first video: http://youtu.be/0QCaZI1kJhY

Sophie was abandoned at a local high-kill animal shelter and slated for immediate euthanasia because she couldn't walk. Westside German Shepherd Rescue of Los Angeles saved her not a minute too soon. Our vets discovered a mass on her spine in the neck area. She has been undergoing physical therapy (including hydrotherapy, acupuncture, massage, and laser therapy) to build her strength and coordination, and may also have surgery to remove the mass, if needed, depending on the prognosis.

We are so encouraged and excited to see her rapid progress, because prior to this, she wasn't able to even support her weight at all. We are hopeful that she will eventually regain the use of all 4 legs and run and play the way any puppy should. Please help us continue to give Sophie the love and support she needs to make a full recovery.

Donations for Sophie's medical treatment may be made at http://tinyurl.com/7urq5nk

Westside German Shepherd Rescue of Los Angeles is a non profit 501(c)3, no kill rescue committed to saving all types of German Shepherd Dogs from high kill shelters and adopting them to loving, qualified homes. Sophie is just one of many dogs that Westside has saved.

Westside recently lost its major source of charitable funding, and is struggling to survive. We depend entirely on the donations of caring animal lovers like you. Please visit http://sheprescue.org/ to see how you can help.

Pele Penny

When we met Penny in the shelter, she was a ball of energy. She was in a small enclosure and could not wait to get out and run. She had mange, ear infections, a slit through her left ear from another dog, and a fear of us leaving her side. Now, she is independent, healthy, loves hiking, and most of all soccer! This is her covered in mud with her favorite toy.

From here and there

Adult large breeds need rescuing, too! Bruno, Ginger and Ally are the best of friends coming from MI, GA and TX. These two "and a half" Ridgebacks enjoy their lives of play...and waiting for a bone. (Bruno's other half is mastiff).

Each had come to their forever home from a different situation of neglect or abuse. Fantastic with the kids and loyal and loving, they give us back so much more than we could ever give them!

Blind dog rescued from trash heap has vision restored

Reprinted from MSN

Trust us, watch this all the way to the end. As unbearably sad as it is to see a small, trembling blind dog pulled from a trash heap in South L.A. by animal rescuers, it's just that much more inspiring and awesome when little Fiona has a bath, plenty of cuddles and her vision restored in one eye by a veterinarian.

The little dog's reaction to seeing the world again and watching her joyfully romp with the Hope For Paws Animal Rescue Organization workers in the video will not only make you believe in the possibilities of human empathy and kindness, but also makes even the Avril Lavigne background song sound good.

STRIKE THE POSE

This is our Joey. Is that a playful pose or what? He is a rescue from Lafayette, IN and is now about 6 years old. That is his "sister", Bella (a lab mix rescue and two years younger) in the background and she truly is as black as this black and white photo displays. Joey is a handsome Australian Cattle Dog (mostly)and his coloring is a golden chestnut and pure white. And, yes he is actually showing his teeth as he smiles quite often.

Their groomer, Michelle, tells us that when she comes towards him with his toothbrush he actually smiles even more!! They were photographed off and on for a few hours and were both pooped pups! They are truly a team and do everything together. Their favorite past-time is digging and chasing field mice in their side yard and it is hysterical to see both noses in the ground and rear-ends up in the air. They have realized that they are actually better able to capture one if they have their noses inching towards each other in order to capture their tiny prey between them!

They are so funny and enjoyable to watch and play along with. When tired and hot then they love to go inside and snuggle up together on the couch. Dogs are truly a gift to treasure!
